Introduction to this Amazing Crochet Blog
Crochet has evolved into an incredible art form, and today, it allows you to create almost any design imaginable. One technique that has truly taken the crochet world by storm is graphgans. These beautiful and often complex pieces of art are created using graph designs, similar to pixel art. Moreover, one of the most popular tools for making graphgans is Stitch Fiddle. Not only is it free, but it’s also user-friendly, which makes it easier than ever to convert images or designs into crochet patterns. In this guide, we’ll walk through how you can use Stitch Fiddle to design graphgans and hence ultimately bring your crochet projects to life.
What is a Graphgan?
A graphgan is a blanket or crochet piece created using a graph pattern. Each square of the graph represents a stitch, typically a single crochet stitch, but you can also use other stitches like half-double crochet or double crochet depending on your project. This method allows you to recreate complex designs, images, or also logos in your crochet.
Using Stitch Fiddle for Graphgans
Stitch Fiddle is an excellent tool that allows you to design crochet patterns from scratch or also from existing images. Here’s how you can start:
- Create an Account: Sign up on Stitch Fiddle’s website to access all its features. Free and paid plans are available depending on how complex your design needs to be.
I use the FREE version!!!! However You can upgrade according to your preference!!!
- Choose Your Canvas: After logging in, choose a crochet chart as your canvas. Then select the type of stitch you will be using (single crochet is most common for graphgans).
-You will select the “charts” option in the home page and then select the option “Create new chart”.
-Then select the desired craft- Of course this blog is about crochet so I selected the option “Crochet”.
– Choose according to your requirement in the “what kind of crochet project?” option. I have chosen “Crochet colourwork” – which is suitable for graphghan, tapestry etc.
– Then choose your yarn based on your preference. I always end up in selecting “no preference”. LOL!!! Because it really doesn’t matter mostly.
- Design Your Graphgan: You can either start from scratch and design your own graph, or you can upload an image and convert it into a graph. Make sure the image is clear and not overly detailed, as intricate designs may be hard to recreate with crochet.
– Option “Empty chart (own design)”
Using this, I created another design, as follows and I also have a youtube live class and a blog for the same!!!

Tips and Suggestions to Crochet with Graph Patterns
- Adjust the Grid Size: Choose the stitch count for your project’s width and height. Larger grids provide more detail but increase project time.
- Customize Colors: Use Stitch Fiddle to select and also adjust yarn colors that match your design for the best results.
- Generate the Pattern: Export or print your color-coded pattern from Stitch Fiddle for easy reference while crocheting.
- Organize Yarn: To avoid tangling with frequent color changes, use bobbins or wrap smaller yarn amounts.
- Follow the Graph: Each square on the graph represents a stitch—track your position carefully to prevent mistakes.
- Use Tapestry Crochet: Carry unused yarn along with your working yarn and crochet over it to hide it within your work.
- Be Patient: Larger graph projects take time. Break the work into sections to stay motivated and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
