Materials & Tools Required to Make the Basic Granny Square
You can use any yarn and a crochet hook of suitable size. For instance, I have used a 4-ply acrylic yarn and a crochet hook of size 3 mm. Additionally, we will also require scissors and a yarn needle.

- mr- magic ring
- ch- chain
- dc- double crochet
- st- stitch
- sl st- slip stitch
- sp- space
Written Pattern to Make the Basic Granny Square
1) Magic ring or mr.
1st round– Ch 2 (do not consider this as a stitch). Next, work 3 dc, then ch 3. After that, (3 dc, ch 3) three times. Finally, join with a sl st to the top of the first dc.
Sl st through the next two dc sts. Sl st through the ch3 sp (aka the first corner space) also of round 1.
2nd round– Ch 2 (do not consider this as a stitch). First, work 3 dc, then ch 3, and 3 dc. Next, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in each of the remaining corner ch-3 sps. Finally, join with a sl st to the top of the first dc.
Sl st through the next two dc sts. Sl st through the ch3 sp (aka the first corner space) also of round 2.

3rd round– Ch 2 (do not consider this as a stitch). First, work 3 dc, then ch 3, and 3 dc. Next, move to the space between the adjacent 2 sets of (3 dc sts) and do 3 dc sts. Then, repeat the above sts three more times. Finally, join with a sl st to the top of the first dc.
Sl st through the next two dc sts, then continue with the pattern. Sl st through the ch3 sp (aka the first corner space) also of round 3.
4th round– Ch 2 (do not consider this as a stitch). First, work 3 dc, then ch 3, and 3 dc. Next, move to the space between the adjacent 2 sets of (3 dc sts) and do 3 dc sts. Then, in the next space also, work 3 dc sts. Repeat the above steps three more times. Finally, join with a sl st to the top of the first dc.

You can add more rounds based on your requirements to further expand the granny square as big as you like.
Once you have completed the last round, do a ch1, and cut your yarn leaving a long tail. Pull the yarn through the last stitch. Use a blunt yarn needle to weave in the loose ends once you have finished crocheting.
