Materials & Tools

You can use any yarn and a crochet hook of suitable size. However, I have used a 4ply acrylic yarn and a crochet hook of size 3 mm. Additionally, you will require scissors and a yarn needle.

Abbreviation

  • mr- magic ring
  • ch- chain
  • dc- double crochet
  • st- stitch
  • sl st- slip stitch
  • sp- space

Written Pattern

Magic ring or mr.

1st round

Ch2 (do not consider this as a stitch). Then, 3 dc, ch 2. Thus in this way do (3 dc, ch 2) three times. Thereafter, Join with a sl st to the top of first dc.

2nd round

As usual, do Ch2 (do not consider this as a stitch). Then do, 1dc in the same st, (1dc, 1 dc) in the next two sts. In the following ch2 corner sp, (2dc, ch2, 2dc). Thus, one side is done for the round 2.

2nd sideà (1dc, 1dc, 1dc) in each of the 3dc sts of the last round., in the ch2 corner sp do (2dc, ch2, 2dc). Hence, repeat the same pattern for the remaining two sides of the square.

At the end, Join with a sl st to the top of first dc of this round.

3rd round

Ch2 (do not consider this as a stitch). Then do, 1dc in the same st, (1dc, 1 dc, 1dc, 1dc) in the next four sts. In the following ch2 corner sp, (2dc, ch2, 2dc). One side is done for the round 2.

2nd side (1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 1dc) in each of the 7dc sts of the last round., in the ch2 corner sp do (2dc, ch2, 2dc). Similarly, repeat the same pattern for the remaining two sides of the square. After the sts in the last corner sp, (2d, ch2, 2dc), you are left with 2dc sts of the last round. Simply do 1dc in each of the 2 dc sts of the last round.

Join with a sl st to the top of first dc of this round in order to complete the round.

4th round

Ch2 (do not consider this as a stitch). Then,1dc in the same st, (1dc, 1 dc, 1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 1dc ) in the next six sts. Then, In the ch2 corner sp, (2dc, ch2, 2dc). One side is done for the round 2.

2nd side- (1dc, 1dc, 1dc,1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 1dc) in each of the 11 dc sts of the last round, in the ch2 corner sp do (2dc, ch2, 2dc).

Repeat the same pattern for the remaining two sides of the square After the sts in the last corner sp, (2d, ch2, 2dc), you are left with 4 dc sts of the last round. Simply do 1dc in each of the 4 dc sts of the last round.

Join with a sl st to the top of first dc of this round in order to complete the round.

You can add more rounds based on your requirements to make the granny square as big as you like.

Once you have completed the last round, do a ch1, and cut your yarn leaving a long tail. Pull the yarn through the last stitch. At the end, use a blunt yarn needle to weave in the loose ends.
